Graphite is a naturally occurring form of carbon with a unique crystalline structure that gives it exceptional conductivity, heat resistance and chemical stability. These properties make it indispensable across a wide range of industrial and technology applications.
Today, graphite is most widely recognised as a critical component in lithium-ion batteries. Every lithium-ion battery contains graphite in its anode, and it is a non-replaceable material in this role.
As electric vehicles, renewable energy storage and portable electronics continue to expand globally, demand for high-quality natural flake graphite is increasing.
Natural flake graphite, particularly larger flake sizes with high purity, commands premium pricing due to its suitability for upgrading into higher-value products such as micronised graphite and spherical purified graphite (SPG) for battery applications.
Graphite is mined and processed on-site from an in-situ raw product into a concentrate
Typically mesh (flake) sizes of +100 or lower are considered ‘large/coarse flakes’ and the remainder as ‘small flakes/fines’

Graphite in energy transition
Graphite is used within all lead acid (vehicle batteries) and alkaline batteries, and more recently it has emerged as a key, non-replaceable requirement within lithium-ion batteries used for storing renewable energy and powering electric vehicles (EVs).
As such graphite demand is closely linked to the global energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables and accelerated growth in EVs worldwide will have a direct impact on the demand for graphite.
Most analysts are forecasting growth of 2-3 times current annual demand for natural flake graphite within the next 5-10 years.
